FIRST WHALE WATCH TRIP OF THE YEAR A SUCCESS
WITH GOOD SIGHTINGS OF FINBACK WHALES!!
Friday, July 4th
Capt. Don reported a very good morning ½ AM trip with
anglers busy catching fluke throughout. A lot of nice size fish
brought to the net today with the largest in the 4lb range with
the shorts also providing plenty of action and a few slammer sea
bass to over 3lbs to boot.
Capt. Mike reported an outstanding day of fishing well within
sight of Rhode Islands south shore beaches. Anglers persevered
through some really tough tide and drift conditions through the
first part of the morning and then by noon as a light southerly
breeze developed the lines straightened right out. The fluke were
caught all around the boat and the fish were quite spread out.
All terminal tackle was productive and anglers did certainly display
a wide array of rigs and techniques to trick the summer flounder
today. The hi lo rigs and the tandem bait rig were top producers
with big jigging motion needed for the tandem bait rig to be effective.
Rental rods also scored well today with one lady scoring 4 keepers
to 4lbs. Another angler brought 8 nice keeper fluke to the net
out of a total catch of 26 fish, retaining only his limit, and
his keepers included fish of 6, 5.5, 4.5 and 4lbs! That same angler
also lost two big fluke halfway up!! Many anglers had 3-4 keeper
fluke apiece. Fish in the 4 to 6lb range were fairly common today.
The pool was taken with a fish just under 7lbs. A few nice size
sea bass and a couple scup in the mix as well. Next 8am boat sails
tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Rich reported a good day aboard the 7am fluke boat. Not
a grand slam but a pick of nice size fish with a decent haul by
days end., especially thanks in part to the last two drifts. Some
nice fish brought to the net with the largest just under 8lbs,
and a few other nice 5lbrs. Whole squid was far and beyond the
best producing method of catching today and accounted for the
biggest fish. Fluke belly also produced but it was not a good
day for spro. A fair number of anglers had 3 to 6 nice fluke apiece
to take home with one sharp fluke angler nabbing his limit. Anglers
also had a few jumbo sea bass in the 3lb range. Next 7am trip
sails aboard the Gail Frances tomorrow morning.
Capt. Paul reported the Gary Kyc group enjoyed a beautiful day
on the water and went home with some nice size fluke to 4lbs plus
caught plenty of shorts to keep the rods bent up and down the
boat throughout the day..
Capt. Don called into say that the first Whale Watch trip of
the year was a success with customers sighting a bunch of Finback
Whales. Capt. Don reported that the ocean was just boiling with
life, in additon to the whales customers were treated to the sighting
of a big Mako shark and Tuna crashing through acres of sandeel
with hundreds of gannets and shearwaters working from above.Next
Whale Watch trip sails tomorrow at 1pm.
Thursday, July 3rd
Capt. Ray reported a bit of improvement in the Striped Bass fishing.
He reported a continued increase in the number of keeper bass
with the largest in the 20lb range and customers also connected
with some nice size bluefish. Best of all they only had 3 dogfish
the entire night!! Next Striped Bass trip sets sail tonight at
7pm aboard the Lady Frances by reservation.
Thursday, July 3rd
Capt. Ray reported a bit of improvement in the Striped Bass fishing.
He reported slightly better numbers of keeper bass with the largest
in the 20lb range and customers also connected with some nice
size bluefish. Best of all they only had 3 dogfish the entire
night!! Next Striped Bass trip sets sail tonight at 7pm aboard
the Lady Frances by reservation.
Capt. Mike reported the fluke fishing on the 8am boat remained
very strong today despite less than ideal conditions. In fact
it got down right sporty after noontime. Anglers picked away at
quality fish throughout the day with numerous fish in the 4 to
6 lb range. George Shephard won the pool today with a fat fluke
of just over 6lbs while Mr. Ogrady had a 6lb slab as well. Mr.
Pak went home with 5 nice keepers to just over 5lbs with most
of them around 4lbs while Eben York had 5 keepers to 4.5 lbs today.
Roger and his daughter Alyson from Bristol Ct teamed up for some
nice fluke today with the largest snared by Alyson in the 5.5lb
range. The wind and tide conditions made things very challenging
for the anglers aboard today but the anglers persevered in spite
of the less than ideal conditions. The fish were spread out very
well around the boat with the majority of anglers getting 3 to
5 large fluke apiece. A decent amount of shorts to keep anglers
on their toes but the highest catch totals were only in the upper
teens and low 20s today. All terminal gear had the same results
today with no one rig special although bait rigs were ever so
slightly more productive today. Next 8am trip sails tomorrow morning
aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Don reported the AM ½ day was OK this morning. Plagued
by awful drift and tide conditions anglers still chipped away
at some quality fluke and a bunch of shorts.
Capt. Richie reported a decent day of fluking despite some really
tough conditions. An incredibly fast drift and big sea made tending
bottom difficult but the anglers who persevered at the rail did
alright taking home 2 to 5 keepers apiece. 10 to 12z was needed
to tend bottom today. Anything pink was really hot today, be it
a pink feather or pink spinner. Two really big fish today with
Kevin from East Providence taking the pool with a 10lb doormat
and the runner up was a 9lb slab. Amy Abbot from FL had 4 nice
keepers and six year old Abby Willer made her full day fishing
debut and took home a nice size sea bass and caught a big smooth
sand shark. A couple other fluke in the 4 to 5lb range with the
rest nice keeper size fish. A few bluefish and a half dozen or
so good sea bass. All in all not bad considering the conditions.
Next 7am boat will be the Gail Frances tomorrow morning.
Capt. Mike reported a solid ½ PM effort last night. He
went to fish some protected waters as conditions were rather sporty
and found his anglers some steady action with shorts and a handful
of nice keepers to 4lbs plus a couple nice sea bass and one large
sand shark made for some excitement.
Wednesday, July 2nd
Capt. Don reported the AM ½ was on the quiet side this
morning. A few nice fish taken but overall the fluke just did
not cooperate.
Capt. Mike reported another awesome day along scenic Rhode Islands
South Coast. From beginning to end anglers had a nice steady pick
of fluke and again a lot of real quality fish taken with 4 to
5 lb fish quite common and a few larger ones up to 8lbs. A bunch
of keeper sea bass today as well. Earlier in the day tandem bait
rigs and the hi lo spro combinations could not be beat but by
the end of the day the rental rods were hot The fluke were quite
spread out all around the boat.. We had a nice group of anglers
today and just about every one went home with fresh fluke. Many
anglers had 4 to 6 keepers apiece today. Angler hi lights include
the following but are not limited to : Eben York took home 5 nice
fluke to 4lbs and a nice sea bass today. Ann Marie from Norwich
was had 6 nice keepers to 4lbs today and a good size sea bass
while Dan Harding went home with 5 keepers to 4.5lbs out of a
catch of 22 fish. Tony from Ct had 4 keepers to 4lbs out of a
catch of 20 plus fish. Another fellow had 5 keepers out of a catch
of 16 fish including jumbos of 7, 5.5 and 4.5lbs and a good size
sea bass. Tony from Long Island had 5 keepers including jumbos
of 4.5 and the pool winning 8lbr. Not as many shorts today just
lots of quality fish. Over 80 keeper fluke came aboard the Admiral
Frances today. Next 8am boat will set sail tomorrow morning aboard
the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Rich reported on the 7am fluke boat the fishing rebounded
in a big way. The bite is back on agreed both Capt. Kyle Blount
and Capt. Rich! Several limit catches today and anglers brought
lots of 4 to 5.5 lb fish to the net with the largest tipping the
scales at 6.5lbs A handful of nice sea bass today as well. The
classic hi lo rigs were the top producers although many nice fish
were caught on traditional spinner rigs. A few bluefish in the
catch as well today. Just under 100 keepers were brought to the
net today aboard the Gail Frances. The action was steady through
the day. Next 7am boat sails tomorrow morning aboard the Gail
Frances.
Capt. Don reported an excellent half day PM trip aboard the Admiral
Frances this evening. Anglers enjoyed a nice pick of fluke of
various sizes on each and every drift with lots of nice fish in
the 3.5 to 4.5lb range mixed in. Eben York nailed 3 keepers tonight
and the pool winner of 6lbs out of a catch of 16 fish and Eben
also took home a jumbo sea bass. Nicky Blount had 3 nice keepers
to 4lbs out of a catch of 10 fish while another angler caught
6 keepers out of a total catch of 20 fish including fish of over
5lbs and a couple 4lbrs. Several other jumbo sea bass this evening
with the largest tipping the scales at 3.5lbs. Both the tandem
bait rig and hi lo spro combinations were effective and the rental
rods also brought some good fish to the net.
Tuesday, July 1st
Capt. Don reported good fishing on this mornings ½
AM trip. Some quality fish in the 3 to 4lb range and a bunch of
shorts kept things going and a couple nice sea bass thrown in
for good measure.
Capt. Mike reported the beach was unstoppable once again today.
This is far and away the best week of fluking this angler has
certainly ever seen. The 8am boat has really been enjoying some
extraordinary fishing of late. The consistency and size are second
to none. It is too bad that only a small group of anglers were
able to come out and enjoy this day with us. The said small group
of anglers boated nearly 60 keepers to just over 7lbs. The action
was steady and for many non stop all day long. Angler hi lights
include the following. Mike Tilleli did it once again catching
9 keepers to 6lbs out of a catch of 44 fish, retaining only his
limit. Mr. Pak had a fine limit of fluke to 4lbs while Sin had
5 nice fish to 4lbs and Sins friend left with 5 big fluke
to 7.2lbs and also left with the pool. Mr. Ogrady had 8
keepers to 5lbs out of a total catch of 46 fish while another
angler boated 9 keepers including a brace of 4lbrs out of a catch
of 32 fish., both anglers retaining only their limits of course.
Millard from Springfield Mass went home with 5 nice fluke to 5lbs
today. Longtime regular customer Doc brought a fine 5lbr to the
net and lost another big one just out of range of the net. Capt.
Mike came down for a few minutes and promptly nailed two nice
fish in the 5lb range. Everyone left with a nice bunch of fish
today. A half dozen keeper sea bass and a few jumbo scup to top
things off. The hi lo spro or hi lo bait rig combination was deadly
today and the tandem bait rig had some very bright moments as
well. A few squid were snagged today on the fluke rigs as well.
Next 8am boat sails aboard the Admiral Frances tomorrow morning.
Capt. Rich reported the fluking was somewhat better today aboard
the 7am Jumbo Fluke/Sea bass boat. Anglers managed a slow pick
of keepers and shorts throughout the day. Nothing huge today but
some nice fish with the largest around 6lbs. Some anglers had
several nice fish apiece to take home today. A few keeper size
sea bass as well. Next 7am trip sails aboard the Gail Frances
tomorrow morning.
Monday, June 30th
Capt. Don reported some excellent fluking along the beach once
again today aboard the Lady Frances on the AM ½ day. Anglers
enjoyed a nice steady pick of good size fluke and some shorts.
A good number of fish in the 4 to 5 lb range but the largest fish
of the day was brought to the net by Daniel Dalomba with a 26
inch 7lb slab.
Capt. Mike reported another excellent day of fluking along Rhode
Island's south shore on the 8am full day boat today!!
Capt. Mike went back to the scene of the crime yesterday and
anglers were picking away at some good size fluke but then around
11:30 Capt. Mike thought we should be doing a little better so
we took a short ride and shortly after the engines were silenced
rods were bent up and down the entire length of the boat with
a dozen keepers boated in minutes!! The rest of the day featured
a nice steady pick of keepers and shorts. A lot of good fish today
again in the 4 to 6lb range with the largest fish just over 7lbs.
Today was certainly in the same category of yesterday rating as
one of the best days this angler has ever seen for size along
the beach. There seems to be a big body of big fish right now
along the beach. Angler highlights include but are not limited
to the following: Lee from New York had his full limit of fish
to 5 pounds with three of the fish over 4lbs. Eric from Burlington
Ct took home 5 keepers to 5lbs while Tommy from Bayside had 4
keepers to 6 lbs. Cory and Nick from Stamford, Ct teamed up for
9 big fluke with Cory taking the best for the day and the pool
with a fish just over 7lbs while Nicks largest was just
over 5lbs. Jimmy from New York had 4 keepers to 5lbs with two
of them over 4lbs while another angler had 8 keepers for the day
out of a catch of 25 fish, retaining only his limit, and he also
had a brace of 4lbrs. Mr. Ogrady had 6 keepers today including
a brace of jumbos of 6 and 5.5lbs out of a total catch of 33 fish..
A number of other anglers went home with 3 to 4 keepers apiece.
Next 8am fluke trip sails Tuesday morning aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Rich reported a tough day today aboard the 7am fluke boat.
The fish that were caught were quality fish with very few shorts
and the majority in the jumbo category (4lbs plus) but just not
in the quantity hoped for. About a dozen keeper sea bass mixed
in as well. Pool winning fluke was 9lbs. Next 7am trip sails tomorrow
aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Chris reported a good ½ PM trip with some nice keepers
and plenty of shorts to keep customers occupied. A lot of fish
were dropped too, probably due to the fast drift conditions. Half
day trips sail daily.
Sunday, June 29th
Capt. Mike reported today was another smashing success. Today
was not only the best day so far this season for numbers but also
the best for size for the 8am boat. This angler has seen a lot
of great days of fluking along southern Rhode Islands coast
line however today would rate among the finest if not the THE
FINEST I have ever witnessed. It certainly was not a good day
to be a big fluke along the beach. The action was hot right out
of the box and it stayed that way until the engines started signaling
the end of the day. Angler hi lights include the following but
are not limited to: Steve from Farmington, CT who had his limit
of large fluke including two jumbos to 6lbs. Two regular customers
from Mass combined for 10 large fluke to 5lbs including several
jumbos while Bob Lazure from Ct put 6 large fluke in his cooler
including four jumbos between 4 and 5.8lbs. A fellow from New
Jersey whos name I neglected to get put 5 large fluke in his cooler
including 3 jumbos between 4.5 and 5.7lbs. Now for the real high
liners of the day: Mike and Tony Tilleli teamed up for a total
of 17 large fluke, retaining only their limit of course, and in
that catch they had a total of 6 jumbo fluke between 4 and just
over 6lbs. Mike and Tony combined for 80 fish today!! Talk about
staying busy!!! Mike had the pool winning fish today and Mike
is one of the best fluke anglers this angler has ever seen. In
between netting fish and his other professional duties, Capt.
Mike fished for awhile and hung 6 large fluke today, 4 of which
were jumbos, and Capt. Mike had the biggest fish of the day with
a fine 9lb slab! The hot rig today was a hi lo spro/bait or double
spro set up. Any hi lo combination was productive and the rental
rods caught some nice fish as well. The tandem bait rig which
had been very productive in the past WAS NOT the ticket to large
scale success today although it did catch. The fishing the past
several days has been on quite a roll here on the beach and we
look for it to continue. A few nice sea bass today and even a
couple scup. Next 8am boat sails tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral
Frances.
Capt. Don reported a fantastic half day AM ½ trip today.
There was not a keeper fish under 21 inches today and the anglers
aboard caught more than 30 nice fish!! A trio of 6lbrs fought
it out for the pool ahead of other 5s. Rental rod bait rig was
the way to go today on the half day boat.
Capt. Ray reported a few nice size Stripers in the 20lb range
last night and he reported some encouraging signs of fish. Still
a few pesky dogfish around but they should be moving out fairly
soon. A few good size bluefish mixed in as well. Next Striper
trip sails this coming Saturday the 5th of July at 7pm by reservation.
Capt. George reported that fishing for his charter was not as
good as on the other boats today. It was a beautiful morning on
the water however with fine boating conditions.
Capt. Rich reported a good day of fishing today aboard the 7am
boat. Mr. Coo had his limit of nice size fluke and Dan Melino
had the biggest fish of the day with a fine 10lb slab. There were
a trio of 8lbrs today as well for runner ups. It was a slow steady
pick most of the day. A good number of anglers aboard had 3-4
fish apiece to taken home. Some shorts in the mix as well as a
half dozen nice size sea bass and a few friendly bluefish. Next
7am boat sails tomorrow morning aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Mike reported the PM ½ trip to be a bit quieter
than the slaughter of earlier today. I suppose the fluke needed
a brief respite! Nevertheless anglers did connect with some good
fluke with Jana from Narragansett bringing a fine 7lb doormat
to the net.
Saturday, June 28th
Capt. Mike was once again quite pleased with the local fluke
fishery along Rhode Islands south shore today. A lot of
quality fish were steered into the net today. Capt. Mike couldnt
believe how good the fishing was today, especially since we had
almost no drift all day long!! The slow lift technique on a bait
rig seemed to be the way to go and today also saw some of the
rental rods catch quite well. A really nice mix of keepers and
shorts today. Chuck and Jody aka the Harrop Connection went home
with 11 keepers and one fine sea bass. They had some 4lb fish
in that tally and their method was small whole squid fished on
a spinner rig. Well done gentlemen!! Scott from New Jersey nailed
6 fine keepers to 4lbs out of a catch of nearly 20 fish today
while Paul from Providence took home 5 nice fluke to 4.5lbs .
Longtime customer Frank from Ct was pleased with his catch of
3 keepers to 5lbs while another angler was pleased with his 6
keepers to 4lbs out of a catch of 32 fish including a nice double
header, this angler also dropped at least 25 other fish today,
many of them half way up or more!! He certainly stayed busy! In
between helping out Capt. Mike put 5 good fish in the box today
with the best around 5lbs out of a catch of at least 20 fish.
All the fluke were gorging on very large squid. A couple fish
in the 6lb range fought it out for pool honors. Just imagine how
much better the fishing wouldve been with a faster drift!
The amount of fluke along the south shore is nothing short of
staggering at this time and we only look forward to even better
fishing in the days ahead. The fluke have been showing some
incredible aggression as well these days chasing hooked fish to
the surface and following hook baits to the surface while anglers
are reeling in to check their baits. A handful of fish have even
been caught half way up off the bottom! Next 8am fluke trip sails
tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Don reported this mornings ½ AM trip was on the
slow side with a few nice keepers and some shorts but lack of
drift and weak tides kept the action from being as good as it
could have been.
Capt. Rich reported a tough day on the 7am fluke boat today.
A decent amount of fluke to 8lbs were taken as well as a few good
sea bass but the action was just not nearly as good as it has
been. After the run the 7am boat has been having for the past
two weeks, a slower day was long overdue. Some tough condtions
with slow drift and weak tides among other things today as well.
Next 7am boat sails tomorrow morning aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Don was pleased to report the PM ½ trip was quite
good this evening along the local beaches. Anglers encountered
some weak tides and slow drift and pea soup fog but anglers enjoyed
a slow steady pick of mostly keeper fluke including some real
brutes. One angler had fish of 8 and 5 lbs this evening and he
wound up with 4 keepers altogether. Dan from lower New York State
had 3 nice keepers to 4lbs to bring home while Jace from Warwick
took the pool with the largest fish of the trip a fine 6lb slab.
Christine Blount brought 2 fine keepers to 4lbs to the net and
was pleased to win the bets wagered against brothers Mike and
Eric. Well done Christine! Six year old Abby Willer managed two
nice fluke this evening on her first ever fluke trip. All terminal
gear worked well this evening although a slowly lifted bait rig
seemed to be the key to success.
Friday, June 27th
Capt. Mike was jubilant to report that the fluking along Rhode
Islands beautiful south shore was the best yet this year
today!! A small group of anglers brought more than 60 keeper fluke
to the net. Lots of quality fish with 4 lb fish commonplace and
a few larger ones up to 6lbs. The high liner of the day by far
was fluke sharpie Mike Tilelli who nailed a total of 16 keepers
for the day out of a total catch of 33 fish., including a brace
of 5lbrs and Mike also had a nice sea bass. Yes you heard that
correct, 16 keepers!!!! And on the beach no less!! Mike retained
only his limit of course and Mike was limited out by 11am!! Another
angler was limited out by shortly after noon and wound up catching
8 keepers out of a catch of 36 fish also retaining only his limit.
Jennifer Zagorski from South Windsor, Ct had a fine limit catch
of fish that included four jumbos in the 4 to 6lb category and
Jen took the pool with her 6lb slab. Capt. Mike came down and
fished for awhile in between busily netting fish he managed 5
keepers in short order including two fine jumbos in the 4 to 5lb
range. Imagine if he had fished all day! Bill from Ct went home
4 fine keepers and a nice black sea bass while Kevin from East
Hartford also went home with 4 keepers and a good size black sea
bass. About a half dozen sea bass and lots of jumbo fluke today
on the 8am boat.Quite a few double headers today. The hi lo rig
today was tough to beat especially later in the trip when it far
outfished any other terminal gear. The tandem bait rig was hot
early in the day but lost its effectiveness with the slow drift
and weak tide later in the day. The fluke bit all day today and
we never did the same drift twice catching well in three different
areas today. All the fluke were loaded with large squid. Next
8am fluke trip sets sail on board the Admiral Frances tomorrow
morning at 8am.
Capt. Rich reported another good day aboard the 7am fluke boat.
Anglers boated approximately 90 keeper fluke today. Capt. Rich
reported that Uncle Eric Willer tuned Kyle, Cory, and Nick Blount
today with the fluke today proving the Willers still have
it!! Eric took home 6 nice keepers today and this was his first
time fluking in fifteen years!!!Capt. Rich came down and in short
order nailed a fine 9 lbplus fish. The largest fish today was
Capt. Rich's 9lb slab followed by two other 8lbrs. Leon Skolink
from Ct had his limit of fluke to 5lbs today and there were a
couple other limits. Quite a few really nice sea bass today as
well with Teddy from Ct getting a 5lb humpback sea bass, our biggest
of the season so far and today was the best so far for numbers
of keeper seabass. The fish were quite spread out around the boat
today with all terminal gear working well. Most anglers left with
3 or 4 nice fluke apiece. It was a solid, steady pick all day
long. Next 7am boat sails tomorrow morning aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Don reported that the AM ½ day trip was fair this
morning. A few handfuls of nice keepers and some good action with
the shorts.
Capt. Mike reported the PM ½ trip met with decent results.
Anglers had a slow start but the last couple drifts of the night
produced some good action with a nice mix of keepers and shorts.
Larry from Cumberland had the biggest fish of the night with a
5lbr and went home with two keepers out of a catch of nearly 20
fish. The Pool fish was just a hare under 5lbs. A few small sea
bass otherwise the take was all fluke.
Thursday, June 26th
Capt. Paul reported a great day aboard the 7am fluke boat today.
Anglers boated 120 or so keeper fluke today. The fish were rather
spread out with the majority of anglers getting 2 to 5 five keepers
apiece and a few guys limiting out. No monsters today with a couple
of 6lb fish vying for the pool. A few 4s and 5s but mostly keeper
size fish. A few nice sea bass today with Bobby Conger nailing
a fine 3.5lb humpback sea bass. Next 7am trip sails tomorrow aboard
the Gail Frances.
Capt. Don reported a decent AM ½ trip today with some
nice keepers to 4lbs and good action with the shorts. The first
drift was red hot with rods bent up and down the boat then we
settled into a pick of fish for the rest of the morning. Several
anglers had a couple nice keepers apiece to take home. Hi hook
caught a total of 24 fish, that fellow certainly stayed busy.
Capt. Chris reported a good half day charter for the Eric Carnavale
group. They boated a good bunch of nice keeper fluke to 6lbs and
had some decent action with the shorts as well.
Capt. George reported the 1/2PM was rather quiet this evening.
Ann from Providence took the pool with a nice keeper fluke.
Wednesday, June 25th
Capt. Mike reported a very good day again along Rhode Islands
south shore beaches today. The second half of the day was undoubtedly
the best with the last two drifts producing some excellent numbers
of keeper fish and a good amount of shorts. Jim Gibbons and his
friend Dave Constable from Poughkeepsie, NY both had a great day
with Jim nailing 4 nice keepers out of a catch of at least 30
fish while Dave not only had his limit of fluke but also took
the pool with a fine 6lb slab out of a catch of also at least
30 fish. Steve Yee and his cousin combined for 5 nice fish to
4.5lbs. Bob Lazure had three fine fluke and a nice 3lb sea bass
to take home out of a catch of at least 30 fish. What makes all
this fluke action more impressive is that the action did not really
get started until almost 11am as there was no drift before then.
Most anglers had at least a fluke or two to take home for dinner
and overall this was by far the most spread out we have seen the
fluking yet this year on the beach with all terminal tackle working
about the same although whole squid was starting to show some
better signs of success very late in the day. Next 8am fluke boat
leaves tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Paul reported that the Robert Beardwood charter went off
with great success this morning. Fishing along the beach Capt.
Paul put his anglers into some good action with the group boating
over 20 quality keeper fluke including three jumbos in the 5lb
range. Quite a few shorts to keep the fellas busy. The trip was
a great success with good weather and excellent fishing.
Capt. Don reported the AM half day was on the quiet side once
again today. Just no good drift conditions for the Lady Frances
until it was almost time to go home. At the end of the trip anglers
did get a few nice keepers and some shorts.
Capt. Rich reported some outstanding fluke fishing once again
on the 7am boat. There were numerous limit catches. About 175
keeper fluke came over the rails today. Some big fish today with
the largest around 9lbs and another one over 8lbs but a fair number
of fish in the 4 to 6lb range and plenty of quality keeper fish.
The beginning and end of the day were the hottest with the crew
running up and down the boat as fast as possible netting good
size fluke with the middle a bit more of a finesse fishery but
experienced anglers catching throughout. Frank Merlot and Ron
Dohan both had fine limit catches as did Mr. Coo and most of his
gang. Sam from Massachusetts crushed the fluke once again today
nailing 16 keepers to 5lbs retaining only his limit. Sam was limited
by 10:40am. Here is what is even more interesting, Sam uses just
squid strips on his spro jigs and NO SPEARING!!! Quite a few shorts
for some anglers with Nicki Blount catching 32 short fish with
most just missing by a fraction of an inch! Even a couple double
headers today. Spro jigs and small bucktails fished on hi lo rigs
were hot today but all terminal tackle showed some results. Just
a couple sea bass mixed in with the fluke. Just about everyone
went home with some fish. Next 7am trip sails tomorrow morning
on the Gail Frances. We would also like to kindly ask anglers
that are bringing multiple rods to please store the extra rods
in a safe place on board the vessel, please ask the crew for assistance.
Capt. Don reported the half day PM trip was okay. Bill from Cranston,
RI took the pool with a fine 6lbr. A handful of other keepers
and a bunch of shorts to keep people busy on a fast drift.
Tuesday, June 24th
Capt. Don reported the AM half day trip was on the quiet side
today which was a let down after the excellent fishing yesterday
morning. A few nice keepers and a bunch of shorts. The 8am half
day sails daily.
Capt. Mike reported a very good day of fishing along Rhode Islands
south shore. Mr. Pak had 5 keepers to 4lbs out of a catch of 35
to 40 fish, and five nice size sea bass including two in the 3lb
range while Sin had 5 good keepers to 4lbs out of a catch of at
least 30 fish. George from the office had 4 nice fluke today including
a couple fish in the 4lb range. Another angler on the boat had
4 good keepers to 6lbs out of a total catch of 32 fish. Everyone
left the boat with some fresh fluke fillets. Next 8am boat sails
tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Mike reported that it was a beautiful evening on the 4
to 8 sunset fluke trip. Just a few keepers tonight but rods were
bent at a steady pace as there were plenty of shorts to make for
a busy evening. The evening trip sails daily.
Monday, June 23rd
Capt. Don reported the first half day morning trip of the year
produced some outstanding fluke fishing. The small group of anglers
aboard caught 25 nice keepers to 5lbs. Gino and his wife from
New City, NY teamed up for 6 good fish to 5lbs while another angler
had 5 keepers to 4.5lbs out of a total catch of 26 fish including
a nice double header. Another group from Ct had 6 nice fish to
nearly 4lbs to bring home. The action was solid all morning and
was nothing short of fantastic the last half hour or so. All terminal
gear was working well but the tandem bait rig and hi lo spro set
up were deadly. A handful of keeper sea bass as well today.
Excited about the great fishing on the beach this morning. A
couple Frances Fleet employees went out this afternoon for an
hour and a half before the thunderstorms and reported the fishing
was red hot. The three anglers totaled 35 fish of which 7 were
keepers and all that in just an hour and a half!! Largest fish
was just under 5lbs. It appears as though a new body of fish has
moved on to the beach. There still is a ton of squid on the beach
and all the fluke are full of them.
Capt. Rich reported another good day aboard the Gail Frances
today, the 7am boat. Mike Jung had his limit of fish to 6lbs while
Po from NY had his limit of fluke including the 7.5lb pool winner.
A slow steady pick of nice fish today. There were several other
limits as well. 100 pct fluke today, no sea bass. Next 7am trip
sails tomorrow morning on the Gail Frances.
Capt. Don reported the 4pm half day fluke boat had a good night
of fishing along the local south shore beaches. Anglers picked
some nice keeper fluke and lots of shorts made for an action packed
evening. Largest fish was around 4lbs. Next 4pm half day sails
tomorrow evening aboard the Admiral Frances.
Sunday, June 22nd
Capt. Mike reported the 8am fluking was much improved today.
A nice mix of keepers and shorts. A slow but steady pick throughout
the day with fish caught at every stop. Kyle Blount far and away
had the best catch today with a full limit of fluke including
three jumbos between 4 and 6 pounds out of a total catch of 33
fish. He was fishing a hi lo spro set up and it was deadly. Another
fellow using a tandem bait rig had 4 nice keepers to 4 lbs out
of a catch of 22 fish. Everyone on board left with some fresh
fluke fillets for some good meals. Next 8am boat leaves tomorrow
morning and it will be the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Paul reported the Technicorp charter enjoyed some excellent
fishing today. His group caught fish up to 7lbs and tallied a
nice pile of keeper fluke to bring home.
Capt. Rich reported an outstanding day today aboard the 7am fluke
boat. There were lots of limits. There were also some anglers
that only had a fish or two but everyone went home with fish.
Spro jigs and bait rigs both worked well today. Angler hi lights
include but are not limited to the following: Pak from New York
had 7 fish to 6 pounds while Choi from NY had a full limit to
7lbs, Oh from NY had a full limit to 4lbs while Kim from NY also
had a full limit to 5lbs and another fellow from the Empire State
was limited out on fluke to 5lbs. Connie and Peter Tu each had
5lb fish today. There were three fish over 8lbs today on the boat
with the largest pushing the 9lb mark. A few good size sea bass
to 3lbs but the take was just about all fluke.
Capt. Don reported this weekends offshore trip did show
some improvement over last weeks on the jig grounds but
overall the action was still not up to the level we would like
to see. Anglers did get some market cod, a bunch of hake including
some brutes in the mid 20s, several slammer Pollock in the
30lb range, a bunch of big ocean perch and a nice monkfish. One
more offshore trip for the spring season and that departs next
Friday Night at 10pm.
Saturday, June 21st
Capt. George reported that fluking on the 8am boat started great
in the morning with lock and load shorts and a few nice keepers
then subsequent moves to find more keeper fish just did not pan
out and all the action came to a crawl. A couple nice scup and
keeper sea bass in the mix today as well. Anglers did enjoy a
beautiful day on the water however and the fishing was solid throughout
most of the week and we look for a fast rebound tomorrow. The
Admiral Frances is the 8am fluke boat Sunday morning.
Capt. Rich reported a very good day of fluking aboard the 7am
boat. Just a few limits today including Jay from Massachusetts
who threw back a good majority of his keepers, keeping just a
few for the table. Jay had several jumbos in his catch today.
Peter and Connie Tu combined for a nice catch of 10 keepers including
some jumbos while Ron Dugan and friend Jon from Ct had a great
day with a nice pile of big fluke to take home including a bunch
in the 4 to 5lb range. Irene Brown and Norm Davis combined for
a nice bunch of fluke to take home with Irene scoring a fine 6lb
slab. It was a steady pick of nice size fish throughout the day
with a couple good size sea bass mixed in as well. Next 7am boat
sails tomorrow morning aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Mike reported his full day fluke charter. the Sharon Paquin
group enjoyed lots of action with the fluke but just a handful of
keepers.
Friday, June 20th
Capt. Mike reported a very enjoyable day of fishing down along
Rhode Islands south shore beaches. A good bite to start
the day with some nice fish coming to the net and a monster estimated
at over 10lbs that pulled the hook just below range of the net!!
Then the bite slowed a bit and the next move produced a red hot
bail job on the fluke. Rods bent up and down the rail with many
double headers. A nice mix of keepers and shorts. Angler highlights
included the following: Roger from Bristol Ct who nailed five
good keepers to 5lbs. Roger and his daughter Alyson enjoyed non
stop action catching nearly 50 fish for the day. Jon Wils from
the lower Hudson Valley went home with 5 keepers today out of
a catch of at least 25 to 30 fish. Capt. Don took a busmans
holiday and managed a couple nice fluke for dinner out of a catch
of 25 fish. Hi hook for the day caught a total of 42 fluke. Mr.
Ogrady had 3 nice keepers today out of a catch of nearly
40 fish. All anglers caught and at least 10 to 25 fish apiece
today and most anglers went home with enough fresh fluke for at
least a couple good meals. Spro jigs were very effective today
but the tandem bait rig and ball jig was also effective. All terminal
tackle produced results. Next 8am fluke trip sails tomorrow morning
aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Rich reported another excellent day of fishing aboard the
7am Fluke/Sea Bass boat. There were several limit catches and
lots of good scores of big fluke all around. Shin and his wife
from New York had their full limits of large fluke to 7lbs plus.
The pool winning fish today was an 11lb slab followed by one just
under 10lbs and a couple others in the 7-8lb range. Doug from
Ct had 6 nice fish to 5lbs out of a catch of 20 fish. Eben York
had 6 nice fluke to take home out of a catch of 25 or so fish
and Eben had several nice fish in the 4-5lb range. The crew reported
quite a few nice fish in the 4 to 6lb range. Just about everyone
went home with some good fish for some great meals. A few nice
sea bass and a couple good size bluefish but otherwise it was
all fluke. Capt. Rich reported a good drift all day that was actually
quite fast by days end but anglers continued to catch throughout.
Next 7am boat will sail tomorrow morning aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Don reported that yesterdays charter, the Mark Lovely
group enjoyed some very good fluking along the beach for their
half day charter with a nice mix of keepers and shorts and virtually
non stop action. The Captain Frances is a great boat for 10 to
25 people and can accommodate upwards to 45. The Captain Frances
is available for half and full day charters and offshore fishing
as well.
Thursday, June 19th
Capt. Mike reported fishing on the 8am fluke boat enjoyed a great
day today. It was a late bite but when the fluke turned on it
was hot and heavy. A lot of quality fish brought to the net today.
Angler hi lights for the day include but were not limited to the
following: San and his two friends from North Brookfield Mass
who combined for 17 large fluke to 7lbs. The fellas had at least
a half dozen fish over 4lbs and they had one nice sea bass, All
using spro jig combinations. Mr. Pak nailed his limit of large
fluke to 5lbs and one jumbo sea bass also using the spro jigs
while his friend had 6 fine keepers to 5lbs on a hi lo rig. John
Plodzik from Middletown,Ct had 4 good size fluke including the
pool winning slab of just over 8lbs. Bruce and his Uncle Jo from
Philadelphia combined for 8 keepers and his Uncle came in with
a fish just under 8lbs that just missed the pool and this big
doormat was fooled by Jos homemade 7 beaded rig!! Jon Wils
from New York put 5 good fluke in his cooler. Eben York had his
limit of large fluke to 5lbs and lost a bigger fish right at the
net while Dan Konkol went home with 6 fluke to over 4lbs. Tom
from Ct went home with 4 jumbo fluke today, all in the 4 to 5lb
range. An angler fishing just a simple tandem bait rig with no
colors or any bells and whistles, just one strip of squid and
one spearing on each hook had the a fine brace of jumbo fluke
of 8.5 and 4.5lbs to top off his limit catch while his buddy fishing
the exact same way went home with 5 keeper fluke to just over
4lbs. Next 8am fluke boat sails tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral
Frances.
Wednesday, June 18th
Capt. Mike reported the fluke fishing on the beach was only fair
today. Just not as many fish around today for some reason. Despite
the fact that we marked amazing amounts of squid from the West
Wall to Charlestown the best that could be turned up was a slow
pick of keepers and shorts. All terminal gear worked the same
today. Capt. Mike feels this situation is temporary and we have
had quite the good run of fishing on the beach this past week
so a slower day was expected. Song Yung took the pool with a nice
jumbo fluke today. Next 8am fluke trip sets sail tomorrow morning
aboard the Lady Frances at 8am.
Capt. Rich reported a great day of fluking on the 7am offshore
fluke boat. About a dozen limits today including Kim from Boston
who had his limit of fluke to 5.5lbs while Shin had his limit
of fluke and took the pool with a fine 10.5 lb slab. Mr. Coo had
his limit of fluke including some jumbos. Cory Blount took his
limit including a brace of jumbos of 8 and 5lbs. There was another
10 lb doormat and a couple others around 8lbs and quite a few
fluke in the 5lb range today. The fish were not suicidal today
and experienced anglers really shined today. Spro jigs and mylar
flies on bait rigs were tickets to success today.
Tuesday, June 17th
Capt. Mike reported that the 8am boat had another very good day
fishing close to home along Rhode Islands south shore beaches.
There was plenty of action just about the entire day with a nice
mix of keepers and shorts. Phil from Torrington Ct had the days
biggest fish of the day, a fine 8lb plus slab as part of a 5 keeper
catch and 25 to 30 shorts. Mr. Pak from New York had 5 nice keepers
to 5lbs and 50 plus shorts for the day including 8 double headers!!
Mike Neri from Rhode Island had a fine catch of 5 keeper fluke
as well including a brace of 4lbrs out of a total catch of 44
fish., and one good size sea bass. Most anglers caught 15 to 30
plus fish apiece today and the majority went home with some nice
fluke fillets. Several other keeper sea bass today and one big
scup. All terminal gear was productive today although the hi lo
spro and hi low bait rig was tough to beat. Tandem bait rig did
well today but had a few complications due to the short bite on
some of the fish. Spinners also took their share of fish today
as well. Next 8am fluke trip sails Wed morning aboard the Lady
Frances.
Monday, June 16th
Capt. Ray reported an incredibly strong moon tide made for slow
squid fishing last night. The squid were there but down deep and
just laying in the tide. To be sure some were caught but it was
a shadow of the nights before fishing. For those who tried
to catch a few fluke at anchor, that is what they caught, just
a few so everything was off last night. We are planning squid
trips this Saturday Night by reservation.
Capt. Mike reported a nice day of fishing on the 8am Fluke boat.
Lots of action again today and a good number of keeper fish with
the largest in the 5lb range. Hi hook tallied a full limit catch
out of 48 fish with the largest around 4lbs including two double
headers while another angler had 6 keepers out of a catch of 42
fish including a nice double as well. There were also several
other double headers today.. Capt. Mike even came down and swung
the rod for a couple hours and went 3 keepers to 5lbs for a catch
of 20 fish. Most anglers aboard caught 15 to 30 fish apiece today
and like yesterday, most went home with enough fluke for a good
dinner or two. A rather unexpected but pleasant surprise was a
bunch of jumbo scup to 2.5lbs and a couple nice seabass. The tandem
bait rig was tough to beat again today although the ball jig was
catching some fish and one angler did exceptionally well fishing
hi and lo spro jigs underneath the boat. Next fluke trip sets
sail tomorrow morning at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances
Capt. Rich reported another good day on the 7am Fluke/Sea bass
boat. There were a couple limit catches and everyone went home
with at least a couple keepers. It was a late bite but once the
first turned on it was fast paced action. A lot more shorts mixed
in today as well with total catches numbering into the 20s for
some anglers. Only one nice sea bass today otherwise it was all
fluke. Shin from Flushing went home with 4 good size fluke and
he took the pool with a fine 10lb slab. All methods were working
with one rental rod getting 5 keepers. There were a couple other
fish in the 5-7 lb range but the emphasis was on quality fish
in the 3 to 3.5lb range. Next 7am boat sails Wednesday morning
aboard the Gail Frances
Sunday, June 15th
Capt. Ray reported that the squid fishing was very good once
again last night with more experienced anglers filling upwards
to a full five gallon pail. Mixed sizes on the squid but still
plenty of big tubes. Those who tried for fluke last night scored
but not as many keepers . A fluke estimated at 6lbs was lost at
the surface when the squid jig it went after shook free. Anglers
aboard had a great time and were happy with the good numbers of
squid they went home with. Next squid trip sets sail tonight at
7pm aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Don reported the offshore cod trip was very poor but reported
that Peter Tu won the pool with a fine green cod in the upper
teens. Capt Don feels the moon was to blame for the poor fishing
and feels that it will be a whole different world out there by
next weekend. Next offshore trip sets sail next weekend and all
crew looks forward to much better fishing.
Capt. Mike reported a very good day on the 8am fluke boat today.
Despite the rain and cool temperatures a small but hardy group
of anglers stayed at the rail and caught fluke after fluke from
start to end. The action was just non stop all day with all methods
producing fish but the tandem bait rig jigged hard today could
not be beat. All anglers caught at least 10 to 25 fish apiece
taking a couple home each for dinner. One angler caught a total
of 65 fish for the day culling a fine limit catch of fluke to
8lbs out of that tally. That angler also had only one double header!!
In some areas the bottom just seemed to be paved with fish. A
couple other good jumbos in the 5lb range and one nice sea bass
as well. The fish were extremely aggressive today often hitting
baits on their way to the bottom.. Next 8am fluke trip sets sail
tomorrow morning at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances.
Capt. Paul reported due to a sudden unexpected infestation of
dogfish the Bass fishing was very slow. We expect the dogs to
move out after the moon and things to be much better by next weekend.
Capt. Rich reported that the Jumbo Fluke/Sea bass fishing was
very good once again today. There were a couple limits and some
really good fish taken once again. Not quite as many jumbos as
the last couple trips but plenty of quality fish with the largest
just under 8lbs. More in the way of shorts today with many of
them falling just below the legal limit. Most anglers went home
with at least a fish or two for dinner and most had a few more
than that. Regular Irene Brown went home with 4 fine fluke today.
A few nice sea bass today and a couple bluefish as well. Considering
the drift was so quick today the fishing was actually much better
than anticipated. Next trip for the 7am boat sets sail tomorrow
morning at 7am aboard the Gail Frances.
Saturday, June 14th
Capt. George reported a decent day of fluking along Rhode Islands
south shore beaches with an excellent bite in the morning and
then a pick in the afternoon. A number of anglers had 3 to 5 keepers
apiece. Plenty of shorts to keep all hands busy with hi hooks
catching upwards to 30 fish each. Nothing big with the largest
in the 4lb range. Jigs were hot in the morning but for endurance
the tandem bait rig could not be beat. Next fluke trip sails at
8am aboard the Admiral Frances Sunday morning.
Still plenty of room on both tonight and Sunday Nights
squid trip. If you are interested in going please call the office
and make a reservation as there are still plenty of squid on the
beach. Whether or not we extend squid fishing will likely depend
upon attendance and of course the fishing over the next two nights.
Stay tuned for further updates on the website.
Capt. Frank reported that the Matthew Griffith charter went well
this morning with plenty of fluke caught including some nice keepers.
There was action all throughout the trip. Cory Blount caught nearly
30 fish on this half day charter!! The charter enjoyed a beautiful
morning on the water and everyone had a great time.
Capt. Rich reported another outstanding day aboard the Jumbo
Fluke/Sea Bass boat. There were at least four or five limit catches
including regular customer Barry Capella. Most anglers left with
3 to 6 large fluke apiece with 4 to 6 lb fish very common once
again. The largest fish of the trip was a 10lb ,29 inch slab followed
by two other 8 lbrs and several in the 7lb range. More shorts
today as well with hi hooks catching as many as 15 to 20 fish
each. A pleasant addition was the dozen keeper sea bass today
with the largest around 3lbs. Spro jigs again were hot today as
were the ball jigs and for bait rigs white spinners could not
be beat. Next trip will take place tomorrow aboard the Gail Frances
at 7am.
Friday, June 13th
Capt. Ray reported a great night on the south shore beaches fishing
for squid. It was a really interesting evening for the small group
of anglers who went and it was a shame that more anglers were
not able to get in on some of the finest action available along
the beach at this time of year. The squid bite started slow but
during the night the pick intensified and the last hour and a
half saw an excellent pick of squid of various sizes including
again some of the largest squid this angler has ever seen. Peter
and Connie had no problem filling a five gallon pail and then
some with all anglers doing quite well. Double headers were commonplace
and even a few triple headers. The squid were in all parts of
the water column but especially prevalent up on the surface where
they roamed by the thousands chasing spearing and each other all
over the place. It was really a sight to see. The other big news
of the night was the fluking that some anglers enjoyed while anchored
up. Yes that is correct, anchored up! One angler who took turns
fishing for both fluke and squid throughout the night had not
only a bunch of nice squid but had his limit of fluke to 4.5 lbs
out of a catch of over 20 fish!! He took his limit of summer flatties
using tandem spro jigs. Another angler had a dozen shorts, 3 sea
bass and 3 nice scup fishing a bait rig while anchored up! Ron
from Westerly fluked the first hour or so and in that time managed
to bucktail 3 fine keepers to 4lbs and a bunch of shorts before
switching over to squid. A bunch of shorts on the squid jigs as
well. Dennis from Mass did a fine job with the squid last night
catching double headers just about every cast, especially later
in the night. If anyone has any doubt about the status in the
number of squid along the beach, rest assured they are still as
thick as can be. Next squid trip is scheduled for tonight at 7pm
aboard the Admiral Frances by reservation.
Capt. Mike reported some nice fish caught today on the 8am to
3pm boat with the biggest fish just over 8lbs. Rather slow drift
again today with a good morning bite. A couple other good fish
in the 4-5lb range.
Hi hook today was using a single small buck tail. Quite a few
shorts made for a busy day for some anglers. Next fluke trip sets
sail tomorrow morning aboard the Admiral Frances at 8am.
Capt. Rich reported an outstanding start to the 7am Jumbo Fluke/
Sea Bass season today. Nearly everyone went home with fresh fluke
for dinner and many anglers aboard went home with quite a bit
of it with the majority averaging several nice keepers apiece
with fish in the 4 to 5 pound range commonplace. It was all fluke
today except for one legal sea bass. Fluke sharpies Pete and Connie
Tu had a great day with Pete getting his limit of fluke to 6 lbs
with all except one of his keepers 4lbs plus, meaning he had six
jumbos!! Connie had 4 keepers, all jumbos over 4lbs with the best
the days second largest fish of 8lbs .Ron Dohan had an exceptional
day with a limit of all jumbo fluke in the 4 to 6lb range. Ron
and Leon combined for a total of 14 big fluke to take home The
pool winner today was a 9lb slab. Longtime regular customer Barry
nailed a fine 7lbr to go along with the other 4 large fluke he
took home. Mylar flies, whole squid and the spro jigs were all
producing well today. Next offshore fluke adventure takes place
tomorrow morning at 7am aboard the Gail Frances.
Thursday, June 12th
Just a reminder that there will be having two boats for full
day fishing tomorrow. Capt. Mike will be running the 8am to 3pm
trip aboard the Admiral Frances while Capt. Rich will make his
maiden voyage for 2008 at 7am for Jumbo Fluke/ Sea bass on the
Gail Frances. The commercial guys report a tremendous amount of
big fluke along Rhode Islands south shore beaches as well
as amazing amounts of big squid and reports from the east are
positive as well. We will have an update on both fisheries tomorrow
afternoon. We will be out squid fishing tonight as well so look
for an update tomorrow morning.
Wednesday, June 11th
Capt. Rich reported that the cod fishing went out with a whisper
today and not a bang like we had hoped. We had a truly fantastic
group of anglers aboard and the weather was beyond spectacular
with unbelievable visibility and brilliant sunshine but unfortunately
the cod went on strike. Anglers did get a few good cod and some
keeper sea bass including one real brute over 4lbs. Quite a few
short sea bass as well and a handful of short cod as well. One
really nice fluke today around 4lbs. A few perch and a couple
pout and that was about it. Look for cod fishing to resume later
this summer and as always stay tuned to the website for any updates
or changes but we will now get ready to begin the Jumbo Fluke/Sea
bass trip which will set sail on its maiden voyage of 2008 on
Friday, June 13th and will sail on a Mon,Wed,Fri, Sat and Sun
schedule for now but will be going daily before too long after.
It was a very good spring of cod fishing overall and we would
like to thank all the customers who came out cod fishing with
us this past spring season.
Capt. Mike reported an excellent day aboard the 8am to 3pm fluke
boat. Anglers had a very good haul of keeper fluke today and loads
of shorts with Sam from North Brookfield, Mass hi hook with 6
fine keepers while Lonnie had 4 keepers out of a total catch of
30 fish. Top fish for the day was 6lbs and the fish were fairly
spread out among the anglers indicating the fluke are continuing
to get more aggressive. Just about everyone went home with enough
fluke for a good dinner or two. Next fluke trip sets sail tomorrow
morning at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances.
Tuesday, June 10th
Capt. Mike reported a very good day of fishing down along the
local beaches. The catching for a good part of the day was about
as good as it gets with frequent double headers and rods bent
up and down and around the boat. No one could say there was any
lack of action today. Some anglers had very good catches of keepers
and others did not but most anglers caught 15 to nearly 40 fish
apiece today. Pak and Sin from New York each had six keepers with
both having fish in the 5lb range and each caught at least 30
fish for the day. Mike from Rhode Island had 2 keepers out of
a catch of 36 fish. Those who did the best on keepers were fishing
very light buck tails with a teaser above it. Buck tailing was
the way to go today as there was hardly a breath of wind and just
about no drift until the very end of the day. It was a hot humid
hazy mid summer like day on the water. One angler kept busy catching
squid this morning as the squid were so thick it was ridiculous,
in fact you might not believe me but this angler who was using
a light spinning rod was broken off by a double header of big
squid.( 5lb test line will do that). Next fluke trip sets sail
tomorrow morning at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances.
Monday, June 9th
Capt. Rich reported an okay day with the cod today. Codfish were
caught at just about every stop. More green fish than dark ones
today including a few nice ones into the middle teens. Some very
encouraging signs locally however as the waters were just teeming
with sand eels. In some places the sand eels were 30 to 50 feet
thick!! The sand eels were even on the surface for while changing
the color of the water they were so thick! This angler has not
seen sand eels in this quantity in about fifteen years. Most of
the cod taken were spitting up knots of sand eels and had fist
fulls of them in their stomachs. Signs strongly point to a new
body of codfish starting to enter the area between what we witnessed
Saturday and again today. We would like to go cod fishing Wednesday
but reservations are required as we want to go and not be stuck
at the dock. If you are serious about coming cod fishing Wednesday,
Kindly call the office and let us know. The trip will be on the
Gail Frances at 7am.
Capt. Mike reported a vast improvement in the local fluke fishing
today. It was like a different world today compared to that over
the weekend. A nice mix of keepers and shorts with the shorts
providing action all day long. Hearse from Queens had 4 nice fluke
to take home including the 4lb pool winner. Next fluke trip sails
tomorrow morning at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances.
Sunday, June 8th
Capt. Ray reported squid fishing was excellent. The last couple
nights were very good but last night was even better with all
the sharpies filling a five gallon bucket or close to it. The
majority of anglers did close to a half bucket or better. A nice
steady pick all night long with squid everywhere in the water
column. Again a few fluke ate the squid jigs but nothing big last
night. A nice mix in sizes with the mollusks but again lots of
big squid to 16 inches plus! Next squid trip is set to sail tonight
at 7pm on the Admiral Frances by reservation so call today and
get in on this great squid fishing while it lasts!
Capt. George reported the fluke fishing was better today. A slow
pick but much better than yesterday. Mostly nice keepers with
very few shorts but just not in the numbers we had hoped for.
Dan Melino had a nice brace of jos that included fish of
5.5 and 4.5lbs. Another fish around 5 lbs as well. No particular
rig seemed to produce better than any other. We look forward to
better fishing tomorrow aboard the Admiral Frances which sets
sail at 8am.
Unfortunately due to lack of reservations there is no squid trip
tonight. It is unfortunate due to the great squid fishing we have
been experiencing. There was some interest but unfortunately it
was too late which is why we stress reservations. Next squid trip
will set sail Thursday evening at 7pm aboard the Admiral Frances.
Unfortunately we did not get out cod fishing today, there were
some calls but not enough people showed up. It is too bad as the
last two cod trips have been pretty decent. Tomorrow we are going
cod fishing because we have reservations. Depending on how the
codfish treat us tomorrow we may try to go on Wednesday, buit
again reservations are necessary as we do not want crew showing
up to just go home. Yes phone calls with meaning behind them are
VERY IMPORTANT! The codfish boat is scheduled to be the Gail Frances
at 7am.
Capt. Don reported the offshore cod fish trip was okay. There
were some signs of improvement. Anglers had a mixed bag of cod,
good size hake, red hake. Pollock, giant ocean perch, a few cusk.
Largest cod was only in the mid teens but some of the hake topped
out in the lower 30s.
Capt. Mike reported the offshore cod trip, the private charter,
was also okay. Anglers did get a decent amount of cod with some
nice fish into the low and mid 20s plus some giant ocean perch
and a few small Pollock. Capt. Mike also noted some signs of improvement.
Saturday, June 7th
Capt. Ray reported the local squid fishing was once again solid
last night with consistent action all night long. A mix in sizes
including some super size tubes. Again the more experienced squid
fishermen fared very well filling one half to nearly one full
bucket. Again light sinkers and casting and fishing different
water depths was the key to success but every done fairly well
with even novices filling a third to near one half a five gallon
pail. As long as the very good squid fishing continues so will
we continue to angle for these tasty mollusks. Also, as the night
before some fluke were caught including one around 4lbs and some
others that didnt quite make it into the boat. Tonight sounds
like a gorgeous night to be out on the local squid grounds and
we will be there. The squid boat will set sail at 7pm tonight
aboard the Admiral Frances please call the office for a reservation.
We have two boats on the offshore cod grounds so look for an
update later tomorrow or early Monday morning to find out the
details. Local cod fishing this Sunday and Monday, thereafter
call for details as we will be switching over to the Jumbo Fluke/Seabass
in the very near future. It looks like a great weekend to beat
the heat and come down to go fishing.
Capt. Rich reported a very good day of local cod fishing. We
caught cod everyplace we stopped with a good pick in the morning
and again in the afternoon. During the morning there was also
a nice bunch of sea bass taken. Again a nice mix of dark and quite
a few green fish today and again the fish were spitting up sand
eels.in addition to an assortment of other things such as crabs
and lobsters, etc. A bunch of short cod today as well with many
of them just missing the mark. Ryan MaGuires group from
the Boston area had a great time totaling nearly a dozen nice
cod to 12lbs and ten nice sea bass. Bob from Blackstone, Mass
had a fine catch of 4 nice cod to 10lbs and a few good sea bass
and another angler went home with 3 good cod to 10lbs, a 3.5lb
sea bass., a nice red hake and a good size whiting. Most anglers
had at least a cod or two to take home and a couple sea bass.
Capt. Rich came down for a minutes and promptly caught the biggest
cod of the day with a fish around 15lbs. He said the cod fought
so hard he thought it was a bluefish or Pollock! All the cod today
were fat healthy fish and full of fight. There were very few dogfish
today and it was a beautiful sunny pleasant day on the water.
Next cod trip sets sail tomorrow morning at 7am.
Capt. George reported a big turnout of anglers for fluking today
but unfortunately the fluke decided to take the day off. To be
sure anglers got a few nice fish and some shorts but it was just
a slow day. Congrats to Connie Tu who took the pool with a fine
6lb slab. Next fluke trip sets sail tomorrow morning at 8am aboard
the Admiral Frances.
Friday June 6th
Capt. Mike reported another very solid day of local fluke fishing
aboard the Lady Frances. Nothing big but once again plenty of
quality fish with the largest around 5lbs. Mr. Pak had his limit
out of a catch of nearly 30 fish while Song from New Jersey had
5 fine keepers to take home. The fish took a lot of finessing
to catch today as there was little to no drift. Far and away hi
lo rigs and or a 1z buck tail fished with a teaser above it was
the way to go today. One angler working a tandem bait rig also
had some good fish but he lost and missed so many more. A tremendous
amount of fish that were just short today, the good news is those
fish will be keepers by the middle of summer. A few good sea robins
mixed in today but otherwise it was all fluke. Next fluke trip
will set sail tomorrow morning at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances.
Friday, June 6th
Capt. Ray reported the squid fishing was very good last night.
A slow pick which continued to build as the night went on. Most
of the catch was big stuff, certainly the biggest tubes this angler
ever remember seeing. Customers filled one half to three quarters
of a bucket with a couple anglers doing even a bit better. This
despite a very strong tide and gusty northeast wind which did
not begin to abate until very late in the trip. Capt. Ray feels
with the cool water temperatures the squid fishing should hold
up for at least a good while longer. Next squid trip sets sail
Friday night at 7pm aboard the Admiral Frances.
Thursday, June 5th
Capt. Mike reported a solid day of local fluking yesterday. Anglers
picked away throughout the day despite strong tide and a rapid
drift due to a rather gusty northeast breeze. Hi hook was Mr.
Pak from NYC with 6 fine keepers out of a catch of between 25
and 30 fish. Quite a few other anglers had 2 to 4 nice keepers
each. The fish were much more spread out than the day before.
No big ones today but plenty of quality keepers with the largest
around 4lbs. One nice sea bass today but otherwise it was all
fluke. Next fluke trip sails Friday morning at 8am aboard the
Lady Frances.
Wednesday, June 4th
Capt. Mike reported despite rain and strong southerly winds the
fluke were biting their heads off in the morning, unfortunately
most were not keepers. To be sure anglers did get some nice fish
with Kevin Sellers from NY taking the pool with a fine 7lb slab.
Hi hook had 3 keepers out of a catch of 24 fish that included
a brace of 4lbrs. One small bluefish and one jumbo sea bass otherwise
it was all fluke. Later in the trip the bite slowed and the weather
calmed but the fish were not biting. Capt. Mike reported that
he had never before seen so much squid all over the fluke grounds.
Tandem bait rig by far out fished all other methods today. Evidence
of this was the squid jigged up and snagged by anglers during
the afternoon. Next fluke trip sets sail Thursday morning at 8am
aboard the Lady Frances.
Tuesday, June 3rd
Capt. Mike reported a fair day of local fluking. There was almost
no drift and no tide all day which made for a slower bite. Anglers
did get some nice fluke including a couple of real brutes. Largest
was a 10.2lb slab followed by Po from upstate NY who nailed a
fine 9lb doormat. Sin and his son combined for 7 fine keepers
and the more experienced anglers went home with a few keepers
each. Not as many shorts today with hi hooks only catching total
fish numbers in the teens. The spro/little white buck tails fished
as described many times before produced the best for keepers.
The biggest fish of the day however was caught on a basic tandem
bait rig. It was a beautiful day on the water however, some of
the finest early June weather Mother Nature has to offer. Next
fluke trip sets sail Wednesday morning at 8am aboard the Lady
Frances.
Monday, June 2nd
Capt. Mike reported a strong day of local fluking. Some really
big fish and in good numbers. A lot of anglers had 2 to 4 keepers
each and caught numerous shorts keeping rods bent throughout the
day. The morning but was nothing short of red hot with a slowdown
in the afternoon but the day had already been made. Some serious
sings of aggression shown by the fish today which is an indication
of the water warming up. David from Bayside was hi hook with 5
keepers including a slab of at least 10lbs. Numerous other jumbos
as well with Mike Jung from NY who had 4 good keepers including
a brace of jos of 7 and 5.5lbs. Many anglers caught 20 to
30 fish apiece today and most of that was before noon! A couple
keeper sea bass and one bluefish topped off a great catch of fluke
and a super day of fishing. The spro jigs fished hi lo or above
the weight produced the best for keepers although experienced
anglers working tandem bait rigs also did quite well.
Sunday, June 1st
Capt. Rich reported the local cod fishing rebounded nicely today.
Anglers had a slow pick of nice market size fish all day long,
all this despite a big swell and slightly dirty water. Imagine
if the weather had been nice all day. A nice mix of light and
dark fish which were still spitting up sand eels indicating more
fish moving on to the local cod grounds. Several anglers had several
nice cod apiece with about half the fish being over 8lbs with
the largest in the lower teens. Some shorts today that just missed
the mark. These codfish were all fat healthy fish, all like footballs!
This angler cannot remember a time this year seeing such healthy
looking fish. A nice snowshoe flounder and big bluefish topped
off the days action. For some reason the perch and pout
were mysteriously absent and best of all hardly any dogfish. By
the afternoon the wind let go and under brilliant early June sunshine,
balmy temps and a settling sea to top off a nice catch of local
cod. What could possibly be better? Next trip is set to sail tomorrow
morning at 7am aboard the Gail Frances.
Tuesday, May 20th
Unfortunately we did not get out fluking yesterday due to the
very strong winds however we will be out today so look for an
update later this afternoon. Also we have an offshore trip leaving
tonight so look for an update later tommorrow regarding the deepwater
groundfish scene. Tommorrow's weather looks fine for both the
cod and fluke trips so come on down and get in on some good mid
spring fishing!!
Capt. Mike reported that the local fluking slowed down once again
today, the cold snap of the past couple days put the water temp
back down to 49 degrees which probably had the fluke off their
feed. The bite was soft and erratic with almost no motion to the
jig the only way to get a response. Anglers still put some nice
fish to 5lbs in the boat with a couple guys getting several keepers
each. A fair number of shorts today but not as many as we would
like to see. Lots of squid showing all over the area so a degree
or two in water temp will make all the difference. All signs still
point to the fishery busting wide open any day. Small white bucktails
and pink feathers tipped wtih squid and spearing were the top
producers today. Next fluke trip sets sail tommorrow morning on
the Admiral Frances at 8am.
Sunday May 18th
Capt. Ray reported squid fishing was excellent last night. The
best trip of the season thus far. Most customers filled at least
a five gallon pail apiece and were busy working on another. Three
guys from New York filled a good size cooler and then started
working on a bucket. There were double and triple headers before
the boat was secure on anchor. The action started hot and remained
so all night long. Next squid trip is set for tonight at 7pm aboard
the Lady Frances.
Capt. Mike reported that the local fluke fishing was vastly improved
over yesterday's action with a really good bite during the afternoon.
Peter Tu had 4 nice fish to 5 lbs. Quite a few anglers had 3 or
4 keepers apiece. Even Capt. Mike came down for awhile and managed
a fine brace of fluke of 7 and 4 lbs respectively. More shorts
in the mix today which meant action throughout the day. Next fluke
trip is set for Monday morning at 8 am aboard the Lady Frances.
Capt. Richie reported the local cod fishing today saw some good
signs of fish but unfortunately not until late in the day. Anglers
got into a pick of nice green fish which were gorging on sand
eels. A couple big fish were dropped today as well. Both bait
and jigs were working but the jigs had the edge. Largest fish
was in the lower teens. Anglers also had a bunch of super size
ocean pout, some red hake, and all the big ocean perch you wanted.
One jumbo sea bass was also taken. One angler had 4 nice fish
on jigs today.
Saturday May 17th
Capt. Mike reported that the local fluking was slow today. Some
nice fish were taken with most of the fish keepers and very few
shorts. A couple anglers had 3 or 4 good fish apiece. Largest
was around 6 lbs. Small bucktails and spro jigs seemed to be the
only way to get any fish today. Even the sea robins were not biting
today! Next trip sails Sunday morning aboard the Lady Frances
at 7 am.
WE ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM
WITH OUR FISHING REPORT PAGE. PLEASE BEAR WITH US.
Week ending May 11th
Capt. Frank at the Frances Fleet reported that we had some great
weather during the week but the weekend weather has just not been
cooperating. Due to a very erroneous weather forecast we lost
our local cod trip last Sunday. Monday was a picture perfect weather
day and the local cod action was good. Anglers picked away at
some nice market cod throughout the day and fishing close to home
and in shallow water. John Wills from lower New York State was
hi hook putting 7 nice cod to 10lbs in his cooler while Jared
from CT went home with 5 nice cod to 9lbs. Several other anglers
aboard had 3-4 cod each and just about everyone left with enough
cod for a good dinner or two. A 7lb blackfish, a couple snowshoe
flounder and some supersize ocean pout mixed in as well plus the
usual assortment of big perch. Another pleasant surprise was the
addition of a buch of large and jumbo seabass. Wednesday again
featured some excellent weather but the codfishing was only fair.
A few nice cod on every stop but just more of a relaxed pace than
what we had become accustomed to. A real mixed bag of other bottom
dwellers including a bunch of nice red hake, a couple good blackfish,
snowshoe flounder and a lot of the biggest kind of ocean pout
and last but not least another jumbo seabass. Largest cod was
12lbs. Even a bunch of short pollock with a couple nice keepers
in the mix. Mostly all bait this week with just a few cod jigged
up. Friday and Saturday were lost due to the late season N'oreaster.
The offshore cod trip was also lost due to the weather. We had
two boats out for squid Saturday Night with one boat doing okay
and the other finding the squid rather uncooperative. Capt. Ray
reported his anglers had a fair bite with some more experienced
anglers doing well with upwards to more than 50 squid apiece.
There is a lot of squid around and the fishing should only get
better once the weather finally settles down. We started our 2008
fluke fishing this past Sunday with excellent results. An excellent
number of keepers and good bunch of shorts made for steady action
all day. The drift was fast and fish were spread out all around
the boat. Spinners had the edge today for both size and numbers.
Largest fish was 6lbs with several other fish in the 4-5lb range.
Week ending May 3rd
Inshore codfishing remained strong this week reports the Frances
Fleet. The first trip of the week found a nice pick of good green
cod and some fast and furious action with mackerel. A couple anglers
filled a 100qt cooler with good size mackerel. Largest codfish
taken was in the mid teens. Some ocean pout and perch and one
fellow had three slammer blackfish all in the 7-9lb range. Saturday's
local cod trip found some very good fishing for the modest turnout
of anglers who braved the weather. The bite in the morning was
excellent with fish all around the boat. Jigs and teasers were
outproducing the bait while the bite was on but nice fish were
taken with bait as well. One angler had jigged up 4 good fish
in the first ten minutes! He then added a fine double header right
after. Capt. Mike came down and jigged up six good fish in short
order shortly thereafter. By late morning the bite slowed up but
it was already a good day. Everyone left with a nice bunch of
cod. All nice market fish in the 5 to 10lb range with the largest
around 12lbs. One 8lb tatoug and one big pout otherwise it was
all codfish. Sunday was again lost due to a lousy weather forecast.
Saturday Night we made our first squid trip of the season but
were plagued by dirty water and too much east wind which had the
squid hard down on the bottom and tough to catch. To be sure most
anglers did at least get a few but the action was not up to par.
Mixed sizes on the squid but more were in the large and jumbo
catagory. A Frances Fleet employee was out fluking for a while
Sunday afternoon and reported in addition to a few fluke, jumbo
squid were nailing the hook baits. with this taking place just
outside the center wall of Pt. Judith. We expect the squid action
to rapidly improve with better weather. Local commercial fishermen
tell of plenty of fluke in all the places they should be this
time of year and we look forward to a great season with our first
trip slated this coming Friday, May 9th.
Week ending April 27th
Capt. Frank from the Frances Fleet reported there was some excellent
local cod fishing close to home this past week. Not everyday was
a grand slam but this past week was certainly one of the best
week's of cod fishing in quite some time. The first trip of the
week anglers enjoyed some outstanding action with the cod with
most of the anglers aboard getting 5 to 10 nice cod apiece. Monday
unfortunately was slower but some nice cod still went into the
bags and coolers and most of the customers aboard left with enough
fresh cod for dinner. By Wednesday the fishing was hot once again
with over 125 nice cod brought to gaff. Again many anglers aboard
averaged a half dozen or more good cod apiece with hi hooks taking
home as many as 9-10 nice fish a man. Friday the action was somewhat
slower but still we managed to pick away at the cod throughout
the day both drifting and on the anchor. On Saturday we had three
boats out on the cod grounds. Paul Gray's Troop 29 from CT had
a great day with the codfish putting some excellent numbers of
fish aboard the Gail Frances while the Ryan Clairmont Charter
aboard the Admiral Frances also had a great trip catching a nice
bunch of cod to take home. The Lady Frances unfortunately had
a slower day on Saturday but the anglers aboard did pick away
at a few cod. The cod this past week have all been nice market
fish mostly in the 6-10 lb range with pool winners every trip
between 12 and 15 lbs. These are all fat healthy green hunting
cod which have been charging through and gorging themselves on
sand eels, herring, and mackerel. Some fish were taken on jigs
and teasers this past week with the most effective jigs being
the smaller 4-8z diamond jigs. On most trips this week we saw
piles and piles of bait and we saw whales every time out. On all
the trips there have been increasing numbers of ocean pout and
the usual good size perch and most days have seen at least a few
nice red hake in the mix especially later in the week. A handful
of large snowshoe flounders to nearly 4 lbs and a half dozen hefty
blackfish up to 9 lbs were taken as well this past week. Last
but certainly not least the first fluke of the new year was caught
on Wednesday;s cod trip. Cod fishing continues five days a week
sailing Mon,Wed,Fri, Sat, and Sun at 7 am. Squid fishing will
kick off this coming Thursday Night and will sail through June
15th on Thurs,Fri,Sat, and Sun evenings at 7pm and return at 1
am. Reservations are required. We will kick off the 2008 Fluke
season on Saturday and Sunday May 10th and 11th sailing at 8 am
and returning at 3pm. A few first hand reports of the first few
fluke being taken on hook baits along the beach and some squid
is starting to move in already. Still plenty of openings on upcoming
offshore cod trips. Please feel free to call the office with any
questions or view our full schedule and daily fishing reports
online at www.francesfleet.com.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week ending April 20th
Not only did the weather improve remarkably this past week but
the fishing showed some good signs of improvement as well. The
offshore trip this past weekend met with much better results than
that of last weekend. The catch was more than tripled! It was
all cod this time with quite a few good size cod in the 8 to 12
lb range with the largest taken by Nicky Blount who nailed a steaker
close to 30 lbs. Nicky also had a nice mess of other good size
cod and caught over 50 short cod staying busy throughout the trip.
Experienced anglers also had good catches with nearly all the
cod caught on Jigs and teasers. We still have a good number of
openings on future offshore trips and look forward to sending
out more good reports. The local cod fishing was also decent for
the most part this past week. Wed and Fri were on the slow side
but anglers had good numbers of hake including some real brutes
on Wednesday's trip. Anglers had upwards to 15 nice hake apiece
that day. The hake were a bit less cooperative on Friday's run.
Some big ocean perch and super size ocean pout mixed in as well
both days. Monday's cod trip was good with some anglers getting
3 and 4 cod apiece. A drift on the way home in less than 50 ft
of water produced a couple more cod and lots of small pollock.
Some signs of jigs and teasers starting to produce as well but
the fresh surf clams have otherwise been the ticket. Quite a few
shorts as well Monday and there were a couple doubleheaders. Saturday's
cod trip started very slow with no drift but by midday there were
signs of life and the last hour or so of the trip produced a steady
pick of good size green codfish with more fish in the 7-8 lb range
and the largest in the lower teens. Nearly all the codfish taken
this week have been caught in pretty shallow water and are full
of fight. These are hunting cod chasing herring, mackerel, and
sand eels all over the grounds. We have seen unbelievable amounts
of bait, sometimes thirty and forty feet thick on most trips and
have seen whales just about every time out. In fact on Saturday
two large Finback Whales put on quite a show for customers not
all that far from the boat! Petrels and Gannets have become commonplace
on the cod grounds as well. Big bulldog Blackfish of 9 and 7 lbs
were taken Saturday as well as a couple nice size snowshoe flounder.
We are sailing for cod everyday EXCEPT Tues and Thurs so that
is Mon,Wed, Fri and the weekends at 7 am. Also draggers have been
starting to pick up both squid and fluke along the beaches so
look for squid trips to start May 1st and Fluke trips to possibly
follow not far behind if this trend continues.

March 18 th 3 pm
There will be no trips on Wednesday the 19 th because of the
weather. Winter just won't go away. The forecast is for wind,
snow and rain. We just can't catch a brake we have great fishing
and terrible weather.
March 16 th 1 am
We are sorry to say that we are canceling today's trip. The forecast
was just updated to NE winds up to 40 knots. This is after we
told everyone that we would be sailing. Unfortunately there is
nothing we can do about the weather. Fishing gets good and the
weather goes to S#*%!
March 15 th 11 am
Can't we catch a brake? Fishing has been great all week and the
weather has been good for March. We have had small crowds and
good fishing. Today we had a good crowd of people onboard with
cabin fever ready to fill their coolers with cod fish. The offshore
storm came a little closer then planned. Capt Mike just called
in saying it is horrendous out on the water. It is unfishable
and he is heading home early. The managed a few fish but a far
cry from what it has been all week. He is making about 6 knots
with green water coming over the bow. It would be nice if the
forecasters would get the predictions right every now and then.
The wind is suppose to drop out tonight so we are hoping for a
better day on Sunday. Call the office after 4 PM and we will let
you know about tomorrow.
March 14 th 1 pm
The Gail Frances sailed this morning with a little bigger crowd.
Captain Mike said they had good fishing as soon as the boat got
to the grounds. There were fish all around the boat. The biggest
fish today were around 20 pounds not as big as Wed. but still
very good action. They put over 150 fish in the boat on just the
first few drifts. We will have a full update when the boat gets
back to the dock. For some reason people went home this morning
not wanting to go on a crowed boat. There was plenty of room on
the boat. The boat was less than half full. Tomorrow we will be
using the Lady Frances. The boat just got back from the boat yard
last night and will be ready to sail in the morning. On Wednesday
trip, Joel St. Germain and Rob Richards teamed up for 17 keeper
cod of which three were over 25 lbs. We will be sailing in the
morning at 5 am and the office will be open at 4 am.
March 12 th 2 pm
Captain Mike called in from the Gail Frances and reported a good
day of local codfishing. He said they had 6 fish over 30 pounds
and plenty of fish between 15 and 25 pounds. This is by far the
best day of local codfishing this winter. We will have a full
report once the boat get back to the dock. Next trip will be 5
am on Friday morning. There was a light crowd onboard today. It
looks like everyone called yesterday just to see if we were sailing.
Well we did. If you didn't show you missed out on some good action.
March 10 th
The Lady Frances is almost ready to go back in the water. The
crew is all excited with the great news about the local cod fishing.
Captain Mike is planning on sailing Wed. morning at 5 am with
Capt Paul. The clam boat is digging tomorrow so we will have nice
fresh bait for the week. Cory caught another 150 LB sword fish
this week in Florida., He has heard how good the local cod fishing
is and is going to head north so he can get in on the spring action.
The office is open week days from 9 to 5 for reservations and
information
.
March 8 th
The good new is that this past week there was some of the best
cod fishing seen south of Block Island in 20 years. The bad news
is we missed it all. The Lady Frances was out of the water for
her annual spring paint job. The boats that were fishing had a
great week. The party boats out of Montauck were coming back to
the docks early with record catches of cod up to nearly 40 pounds.
The fish were hitting on bait and on jigs. From all accounts this
was as good as cod fishing gets. The Lady will be back in the
water this week and we will be ready for action. We will be sailing
Wed. Fri. Sat and Sundays. If the fishing keep up this good we
will be adding days to the schedule
.Monday, March 3, 11am
Winter weather kept the Frances Fleet boats tied to the dock
this past week. It is too bad because the commercial boats reported
that they where catching lots of codfish. The cod fish have been
chasing schools of herring just south of Block Island. We are
hoping for a little better weather no that spring is just around
the corner. Cory Blount is still in Florida catching swordfish,
sail fish and Mahi Mahi. He went down for 5 days and has been
there for two months.
The RI Fish Council will be meeting over the next couple of weeks
to set this years regulations for scup, seabass, blackish and
Fluke. You should make an attempt to go to there meetings so your
voice can be heard. If things go well we should have 7 fluke and
no closed season. Keep your fingers crossed.
The George's Bank trip for this coming weekend is going to have
to be canceled. The boat yard called us on Friday and they have
an open spot for us this coming week so we will be hauling the
Lady Frances out and giving her a fresh coat of paint. We are
planning on being back in the water in time to sail for the Nantucket
wreck trip the following weekend.
Sunday, February 24th
The Lady Frances has made it out codfishing the past two Sundays.
Last Sunday's action was much better than today's. Last Sunday
anglers had a nice mix of large red hake, a few nice cod to 10lbs
and some truly giant bergalls. Today despite marking bait piles
of herring thirty plus feet high the codfish just seemed to have
lockjaw. Still plenty of good signs south and east of Block Island
and everything bodes well for the weeks ahead.
Friday February 15th
Due to severe cold temperatures tonight and wind forecasted for
tomorrow, Saturday February 16th, the boat will not be sailing.
As of right now, the forecast looks good for Sunday but you might
want to give us a call Saturday afternoon.
Friday February 8 Th.
The Lady Frances is scheduled to sail at 5 am Sat. morning. The
weather for Sat is the best for the weekend. Sundays trip will
likely be canceled. Unfortunately the boat did not sail today.
We are not sure why people call and say they are coming down and
then don't show up. The crew gets the boat ready and others drive
down after we tell them we have had enough calls to sail. We try
to let everyone know how many we except in the mornings so please
if you are not going to show up please don't ay that you are going
to.
Wednesday February 6th
Cory Blount just called the office to say he is having a great
trip with his Uncle Eric in Fla. They have been fishing every
chance that the get. He had to laugh when after traveling 1000
miles the first fish he caught was a blue fish. His laughing soon
changed to utter excitant. In the last two night of fishing Cory
has caught 6 Swordfish himself. That is right 6! Cory said he
is searching for a dock for the Gail Frances. He is tring to talk
his dad into bringing the boat to Fla. You never know. What Capt
Frank is likely to do.
Monday February 4 Th. .2 PM
The Lady Frances sailed yesterday with a few more people then
the last couple of trips. They came out to enjoy the nice almost
spring day. Shana Kuhse group of 4 had a good day with a total
of 37 fish. A mix of cod and hake. The weather looks okay for
the week. We are planning on sailing Wed, Fri, Sat and Sunday
at 5 am. Make sure you call the office before heading down to
the docks.
Sunday January 27 at 11am.
Captain Mike at the Frances Fleet reports that it was a successful
week on the cod grounds. Once again the boat sailed with only
a few people on each trip. On Saturday's trip high hook was 6
cod fish. The pool fish was in the mid teens. The hake were not
as plentiful as last week but there were still a few around. The
fish have all been located in about 130 feet of water se of Block
Island. We are still scheduled to sail 4 days week at 5 am. Keep
