Roger reported a solid day of summer cod fishing on Coxes Ledge. Being armed with fresh shell bait helped edge out the crazy strong tide steamrolling hard to the west today along with an opposing wind direction The cod fish were not as spread out as we would have liked but a number of fishers had four to six nice fish apiece to take home today. Beautiful fresh shell bait far out produced jigs and teasers but jigs did grab a few nice fish. Traditional hi lo cod rigs of the packaged variety seemed to have an edge of dropper loops tied direct. This is sometimes the case when the tide is screaming as the dropper loops can tend to spin in a strong tide. The cod varied in size from throwbacks to a couple of fish that threatened the 20 lb mark. Most were 5 to 12 lbs and there was a mix of dark and green fish today. Fishers also found a good number of nice size sea bass to 4 lbs and some fishers had limit catches of sea bass. We also had a half dozen or so nice size silver hake with a couple of them in the 10 to 15 lb range which is the first time that Roger ever remembers seeing them this size fishing rocky bottom. This size hake is almost exclusively found on wrecks in this day and age. A scattering of ling but not nearly as many as last trip. A handful of big sucp, a bunch of big ocean perch, and a lot of large sea flounder to at least 4 lbs!! A number of fishers had their limit of the sea flounders. A few whiting and a lot of catch and release ocean pout of all sizes (they are protected) rounded out the days activity. Not a single unmentionable. A pile of outstanding pictures showcasing some of the angler hi lights today are provided courtesy owner Christine Blount.
COD SEASON STARTS 9/16!!!!
Capt. Rich reported a solid day of fishing aboard the Gail Frances. There was a near boat limit of good size sea bass to at least 4 lbs and a decent amount of fluke with at least three or four limit catches recorded and others who were right behind. There were some quality fish over4 lbs with the biggest around 7 lbs. There were also some big scup caught with sizes to nearly 3 lbs along with some big mackerel once again. All in all a very nice day of fishing! Next full day will sail tomorrow morning at 7 am with Capt. Matt aboard the Gail Frances.
Some action with the catching aspect but not a whole lot to keeping on either of the half day outings. Still bent rods with sea robins and short sea bass and short fluke made for some happy fishers. Biggest fish for the afternoon trip was a fluke of around 3.5 lbs. Two half days on tap tomorrow with the first at 8 am and the second at 1 pm, both aboard the Lady Frances.
Captain Matt reported a good night on the night bass boat. Things started off good with 4 fish the first drift and the fish just kept coming. We lost a few fish but boated most of them. Pool fish was in the mid 20’s. We only have a few days left to book in our bass season. We will be sailing Wednesday-Saturday night at 7pm weather depending.
