Owner Capt. Frank Blount and General Manager Capt. Cory Blount would like to let all of the Tuna fishers, who are booked on the first trip of the season, that they are both closely monitoring the weather for the upcoming trip. A decision regarding a trip that sails Tuesday Night weather permitting would likely not be made until at the earliest sometime Tuesday late morning or early afternoon. We ask that fishers do not call and inquire about the weather before Monday evening.
Whale Watching was again extraordinary today. Just one more possible outing left on this coming Tuesday, weather permitting at 1 pm. Fin Back and Hump Back Whales galore.
The report from the Gail Frances was of a good day of fishing and a rather extraordinary day overall on the water. Excellent numbers of big sea bass with most fishers limited out on these tasty smaller relatives of the southern grouper and solid numbers of fluke pleased fishers today with the pool fish contest being measured between a few fluke in the 6.5-7 lb range. A good number of fishers had two or three nice fluke apiece to go along with their sea bass limits. Good numbers of mackerel were around again for those fishers who were interested. Some of these mackerel are up to 18 plus inches in size and over 2 lbs!! Tremendous amounts of squid and mackerel and peanut bunker on the local grounds around Block Island. The extraordinary portion of today’s trip was that the fishers aboard were treated to dozens of breaching Hump Back Whales and hundreds of dolphin! Good fishing and stellar Whale Watching on the same trip is not something we see every day in these parts. The ocean is simply alive the likes of which we have not seen in quite some time and eventually only good things will come from this. Next fluke/sea bass full day will set sail tomorrow morning at 7 am with Capt. Rich aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Matt reported the morning half day charter aboard the Admiral Frances for the Joey Tomaino group found great fishing for nice size sea bass.
Cory reported a great morning of fishing despite a rocket ship speed like drift and certainly more wind than the forecast 5 to 10 knots of wind. Pretty much all sea bass for the fishers today with quite a few easy limits reached. Buck tail jigs with gulp cast up tide and worked back to the boat produced wildly successful results for a few fishers today and produced many double headers for one particularly skilled rod handler! Sizes to nearly 4 lbs. Just a couple of fluke today. Plenty of short sea bass as well to keep rods bent and anglers busy at the rail. Some great pictures showcasing at least a few angler hi lights provided courtesy owner Christine Blount. The afternoon half day was reported to be good also for sea bass with one jumbo fluke landed as well. Two half days tomorrow, both on the Admiral Frances. The first will set sail at 8 am and the second at 1 pm.
