First mate Chris L reported a very good day of fishing again aboard the Gail Frances. Nearly 100 nice size fluke hit the decks of the Gail with more than half being 4 lbs or better and nearly two dozen over 6 lbs with the biggest solid ten pounds and several in the 8 to 9 lb range just behind. Two very seasoned fluke anglers also reported loosing fluke that they suspect were well over ten pounds with one angler saying that he never experienced a fluke that big on the end of his line but eventually the hook pulled. The number of fish over 8 and to even ten pounds over the past few days has been almost astonishing so now may just be the prime time to come in search of a doormat of the season or even a lifetime. There were several limit catches of fluke and a good number of the anglers aboard were not far behind with four to seven nice fish apiece. Troy on a busman’s holiday had an easy limit of both fluke and sea bass with three fluke in the 7 lb range and lost another fluke around 6 lbs boat side! A decent amount of good size sea bass, some blue fish and a few scup mixed in as well. A Mako shark estimated at nearly 60 lbs found a white buck tail too interesting to pass up and gave one angler quite a thrill and other on lookers something really cool to watch. The Mako parted ways boat side. Overall it sounds like buck tail set ups were most productive today although late in the day when the drift picked up a bit and bait rigs started to really produce as well. Tomorrow sounds like another good day to fishing with Capt. Rich ready to set sail on the Gail Frances at 7 am.
Capt.George reported a good morning half day with a good showing of fluke and sea bass. Nothing huge but a decent amount of nice keepers and the most fluke we have seen on a half day in several days. The afternoon trip also showed a respectable pull of nice keeper fluke and slightly less but better size sea bass. Tomorrow we will feature two half days with the Lady setting sail at 8am and again at 1pm. Back to back trips net an angler a $15 discount on the second trip.
Roger reported a nice turnout of cod enthusiasts for the first official summer cod trip to Coxes Ledge. Unfortunately the fishing was somewhat underwhelming. There was a very good jig bite for the first hour of the trip in the morning, centered mostly in the bow and mid ship. Some anglers quickly put several nice market cod apiece in their coolers. But as soon as it began it ended. The rest of the day featured several moves all over the ledge finding just a couple cod here and there, a few handfuls of nice ling, a few small wreck hake (in the rock piles), a couple pollock and a half dozen super size winter flounder including one specimen that went 21 inches and 4.5 lbs. The super hero flounder honor went to longtime regular customer Willie from Queens. Roger commented it was one of the biggest ones he had ever seen on rod and reel. A few handfuls of nice size ocean perch. While we certainly represented, it was somewhat lack luster considering the red hot first hand reports over the past month. Angler hi lights as follows: Lucky (Orlando) from Greenwich CT was by far the cod star of the day who jigged up 7 nice cod to 11 lbs and one nice keeper pollock and that 11 lbr allowed him to take home the pot of gold today!! Larry from NYC was on deck with 5 nice keepers. Anthony Jr. jigged up four nice cod to ten pounds and Anthony Sr. was right behind with three nice keepers, 8 year old Jack O’Grady jigged up a pair of fine market cod and so on. We try again next Sunday the 24th. Please call to make a reservation or book on line by 6 am Saturday morning the 23rd. Photos today courtesy of Roger.
Some pics from last Thursday Night’s Striper trip including the fish well over 40 lbs. Last night’s outing was not as good as Thursday and Friday’s but a few good size bass to 20 lbs were taken and a few blue fish. In general things were much better this past week. Our next trip is Wednesday Night at 7pm by reservation so if interested please book on line before Tuesday Night at 7pm or call the office and speak to a customer service representative.
